The traveler inadvertently left a laptop on a park bench in Hekou in March. Instead of vanishing within minutes, the device sat untouched for three days, as seen in CCTV footage of bystanders merely walking by.
It was only when local resident Li spotted the abandoned laptop that it was finally picked up—not to keep, but to return to the police. Officers later verified that the laptop belonged to the US tourist and returned it to its thankful owner.
A video that emerged online shows the tourist expressing his gratitude to the officers after reclaiming the laptop.

“It’s very special that people are honest and don’t take things. You help the system function and keep civilization civil and truthful. Thank you very much,” he says before shaking hands with the police.
His appreciation didn’t stop there.
The tourist arrived at the police station carrying a traditional Chinese thank-you banner, a sign of appreciation for acts of kindness and public service. This touching incident has since gained attention online, with many social media users commending the local resident’s honesty and the prompt response of the police.
