During a recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Turkey, Trump indicated he would permit Ukraine to produce Patriot missile interceptors to bolster defenses against Russian attacks. However, he has since reconsidered this commitment, despite hosting Zelenskiy at the White House earlier this week.
When questioned about the Patriot missiles at a cabinet meeting held at Camp David on Friday, Trump expressed concerns over sharing sophisticated U.S. weaponry, particularly missile technology.
”It’s a significant decision,” Trump remarked.
He added, ”President Zelenskiy desires some Patriots and Tomahawks, both of which are lethal—one for offense and one for defense.”
”You must be very discerning and very cautious. Currently, we have not reached an agreement on that. We are in discussions, but it’s challenging to transfer that level of technology. While I doubt this will happen, there are individuals who, if given that technology, might eventually turn against you,” Trump elaborated.
As Russia increases its air assaults, Ukraine is facing a severe shortage of Patriots, which are the only weapons capable of intercepting ballistic missiles in its arsenal.
Ukraine has been pursuing a co-production agreement for the Patriot PAC-3 missiles to intercept ballistic threats, aiming to establish domestic manufacturing.
Trump’s earlier commitment to allow a production agreement surprised many, and Ukrainian officials have engaged with Pentagon representatives and industry leaders since then to finalize details.
Those discussions are ongoing, and Ukrainian ambassador Olha Stefanishyna stated on Thursday her belief that Lockheed Martin, the maker of PAC-3 missiles, is dedicated to enhancing collaboration with Ukraine. Lockheed executives met with Zelenskiy on Tuesday and are planning to visit Ukraine soon, she noted.
