The 37-year-old revealed his decision through a heartfelt video on Instagram, conveying that it was time for him to move on. He expressed deep appreciation for everyone who supported him throughout his career.
“Life has its beginnings and endings. When the moment arrives, it’s important to respect it and progress. I have always depended on timing in my batting and recognized its significance,” he stated.
The right-handed batsman participated in 85 Test matches for India, amassing 5,077 runs at an average of 38.5. He also represented the Men in Blue in 90 One Day Internationals, scoring 3,767 runs at an impressive average of 35.7. His final international match was during the Test series against the West Indies in July 2023.
In the video, Rahane reflected on the fact that every journey has a beginning and an end, emphasizing that he believed this was the right time to step back from international cricket. He reminisced about his journey from Dombivli to wearing the India cap, which had always been his biggest aspiration.
“My guiding principle has always been to prioritize my country and my team above myself. I played this game with utmost sincerity, believing that if your intent is genuine, the game will always reward you,” he mentioned.
Rahane noted that although his time as an Indian player had concluded, his connection to the sport would persist. He shared his eagerness to mentor young cricketers, stating, “I look forward to supporting the next generation by sharing the values this sport has imparted to me and giving back to a game that has offered me so much.”
He extended his gratitude to the BCCI, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), teammates, coaches, IPL franchises, family, and friends, and offered special thanks to the fans who supported him through his ups and downs.
In the caption of his Instagram post, he expressed, “Cap 278 signing off. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. Forever grateful.”
Rahane has captained India in 11 international matches across various formats, including six Tests, three ODIs, and two T20Is. He is currently in the UK as part of the commentary panel for The Hundred.
