The athlete from Manipur achieved a combined lift of 199kg, earning her a place on the podium, while Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade excelled in the competition with a total of 229kg. This bronze further contributes to India’s flourishing weightlifting journey, which began with Mirabai Chanu’s gold and the silver medals captured by Chanambam Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi.
Growing up in Manipur, Bindyarani looked up to the renowned Mirabai Chanu and aspired to walk in the Olympic medallist’s path. Her mother was instrumental in fostering discipline during her early years, and Mirabai herself offered advice on enhancing Bindyarani’s diet upon discovering her preference for fast food over nutritious meals.
This advice proved essential as Bindyarani progressed through the junior circuit, ultimately establishing herself as one of India’s top weightlifters.
The Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022 showcased Bindyarani on the international stage, where she earned a silver medal in the women’s 55kg category.
Before this, she had already made her mark by winning gold at the 2019 Commonwealth Championships, followed by a silver at the 2021 edition. Her consistent performance continued with a silver medal at the 2023 Asian Championships, solidifying her status among India’s elite weightlifters.
