This is a major disappointment for cricket-playing nations, especially India, where the women’s team secured a silver medal when cricket returned to the Commonwealth Games in 2022 after a 24-year absence.
Cricket had been featured only once in the history of the Commonwealth Games, during the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games, before making a comeback in Birmingham with the women’s T20 format.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will consist of just 10 sports and 215 medal events, a significant reduction from the 20 sports that were part of Birmingham 2022. In addition to cricket, several key sports such as badminton, hockey, wrestling, squash, table tennis, rugby sevens, beach volleyball, diving, and triathlon have also been excluded from the program.
This reduced schedule is a direct result of the withdrawal of the original host, Victoria state in Australia, which pulled out in July 2023 following soaring projected costs estimated at AUD 6-7 billion.
After Victoria’s exit, the Commonwealth Games faced uncertainty until Glasgow stepped in as the replacement host, backed by financial support from Commonwealth Games Australia.
With less than two years to prepare for the event and a strong focus on cost-cutting, organizers decided to use only four existing venues along with a streamlined competition schedule, rather than invest in new infrastructure.
The reduced format has led to nearly 2,000 fewer athletes competing compared to the last edition, necessitating a substantial cut in the number of sports and medal events.
Despite cricket’s increasing global popularity and its successful return in Birmingham 2022, the sport did not make it onto the final program for Glasgow due to the Games’ limited scope.
While cricket will be missing from the Commonwealth Games this time, it is poised to make a comeback at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, marking its first appearance in over a century.
The future of cricket at the Commonwealth Games will hinge on the selected sporting program and organizational priorities set by each host city for upcoming editions.
