The Croatian Football Federation disclosed Dalic’s resignation on Wednesday, just days after Croatia’s 2-1 loss to Portugal in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32.
“I depart with a content heart, proud of my role in achieving some of the greatest milestones in Croatian football’s history, and I wish my successor, the national team, and Croatian football continued success,” Dalic remarked.
The 58-year-old acknowledged that he thought about his decision after receiving significant support following Croatia’s World Cup elimination, but ultimately decided it was the right time to step down.
“I have always believed that there’s no greater privilege than leading my national team. The encouragement I’ve received in recent days made me reconsider my choice, but I feel this is the appropriate moment to end this remarkable chapter,” he stated.
The Croatian Football Federation called Dalic’s time in charge an unforgettable experience and honored the coach for guiding the country through the most fruitful era in its football history.
“Coach, thank you for everything — the victories, the milestones, the qualifications, the medals, the unity, the respect, and your steadfast dedication to fight for Croatia, both on and off the field,” the federation expressed.
Dalic led Croatia’s esteemed generation, headed by Luka Modric, to the finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia before achieving a third-place finish at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. He also took the team to the finals of the 2023 UEFA Nations League.
The Croatian federation has yet to reveal Dalic’s successor as it begins preparations for the upcoming international cycle.
