The anticipated changes are slated to take effect later this year as Meta unveils updated pricing for its Business Agent Platform.
Why are third-party AI solutions more costly?
Beginning October 1, businesses leveraging third-party AI models on WhatsApp may face total costs as high as $968 for every 10,000 higher-complexity AI interactions, influenced by token consumption. In contrast, Meta’s pricing estimates suggest that similar interactions through Meta AI would range from approximately $400 to $500.
Meta’s pricing details also indicate that 10,000 lower-complexity service interactions would cost around $268. Currently, WhatsApp does not impose charges on businesses for AI-agent interactions via the Meta Business Agent Platform.
This proposed pricing may impact companies utilizing a variety of AI models for customer interactions, including ChatGPT, Claude, Qwen, Mistral, and Kimi, by raising the total expenses associated with servicing users on WhatsApp.
According to Meta’s revised pricing documentation, the Meta Business Agent Platform was launched on July 1, 2026. Starting August 1, businesses will be billed on a per-token basis for messages utilizing the Meta Business Agent Platform.
From October 1 onward, Meta will also introduce charges per message for service messages, which encompass those facilitated by human agents or third-party AI solutions, as well as utility messages sent within an active 24-hour customer service window.
Understanding the new pricing model
Meta disclosed that businesses employing the Meta Business Agent Platform will incur charges based on token usage. The company also noted that firms using third-party AI solutions might face additional fees from their AI provider, alongside Meta’s messaging charges and any fees levied by their messaging solution provider.
