Indian gymnasts Harshit Damodaran and Akshat Bajaj made history by achieving a gold-silver finish in the junior men’s vault event at the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships held in Zunyi, China, on Sunday.

Harshit claimed the gold with a score of 13.649, while Akshat secured silver with a score of 13.433 in this prestigious continental event.

Harshit delivered two impressive vaults, scoring 13.866 on his first attempt, which had a difficulty (D) score of 4.8, and a second score of 13.433. His overall performance placed him ahead of fellow gymnast Akshat.
Akshat achieved scores of 13.500 and 13.366 on his two vaults, finishing with an average of 13.433 to clinch the silver medal.

“This is a remarkable achievement by the boys. They prepared diligently during the national camp in Bhubaneswar last month. I also took them to London as part of their training. They are progressing well, and we hope to see India win medals in the 2030 Commonwealth Games,” commented Rakesh Patra, India men’s artistic gymnastics coach, to PTI.

“The Odisha government has been incredibly supportive throughout this journey,” he added.

Akshat is coached by Praveen Sharma, while Harshit receives training from Raja Babu Yadav, who manages his athletic and sport-specific preparation.

Both Harshit and Akshat were part of the Indian junior men’s artistic gymnastics team that earned a bronze medal in the team competition on Friday.

Attention will now turn to the women’s competition, with the Asian Junior Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships scheduled from June 25 to 28 in Zunyi, China.
