On Thursday (June 18), European Union leaders reached a consensus to prolong sanctions on Russia in response to its ongoing war with Ukraine for an additional year, as stated by a spokesperson for the meeting’s chair. This decision during a summit in Brussels signifies the first instance that such sanctions—aimed at specific sectors of the Russian economy—have been extended for a year, as they had previously been renewed every six months.
