This facility will be the first Marine Corps stockpile of its type in Australia and is part of wider efforts by Washington to enhance its military logistics network throughout the Asia-Pacific, in light of concerns regarding China’s growing military power.
Recently published US Navy documents indicate that $30 million has been allocated for warehouses and office facilities in Victoria to facilitate what is described as “critical forward provisioning.” The stockpile is anticipated to be fully operational by 2028.
Initially, equipment will be stored in Melbourne before it is moved to dedicated US warehouses planned for construction at the Bandiana military base in rural Victoria next year.
The US Navy is on the lookout for a defence contractor to manage the facility, with about 110 engineers, mechanics, and logistics specialists expected to oversee the stockpile, which will include crew-served weapons.
“Marine Corps operations in Australia contribute to integrated global sustainment by ensuring ready-for-issue equipment and supplies for operations and exercises across the Indo-Pacific,” a spokesperson for US Marine Corps Forces Pacific informed AFP.
The spokesperson noted that the equipment will be kept at a high level of readiness and operations will be closely coordinated with Australia’s Department of Defence.
The Pentagon has requested US$500 million from Congress for 2027 to boost the prepositioning of military gear and fuel across the Asia-Pacific as part of efforts to deter China.
Analysts told AFP that the planned facility’s location in southeastern Australia may also reflect concerns about the reach of Chinese missile systems. A recent report by the Lowy Institute highlighted that China possesses the capability to target northern Australia using ballistic missiles launched from its South China Sea outposts.
John Blaxland, a professor of international security at the Australian National University, remarked to AFP that the escalating strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific has increased Australia’s significance for military logistics and storage.
