India to Implement AI for Standards That Machines Can Read, Says Consumer Affairs Secretary
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs is set to create machine-readable, SMART standards utilizing artificial intelligence tools to lessen the compliance burden on industries, a senior official stated on Thursday, June 4.

Machine-readable standards convert regulatory requirements into structured digital rules that computer systems can process directly, allowing for automatic compliance verification without needing manual intervention.

SMART (Standard Machine Accessible, Readable and Transferable) formats advance this by being dynamic, continuously updated, and embedded within software and manufacturing workflows.
Speaking at an event organized by FICCI, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare indicated that the department is exploring ways to harness emerging technologies, particularly AI, to modernize India’s standards ecosystem.

”We recognize that the emergence of new technologies, especially AI, may result in significant disruptions and challenges. However, we must find ways to leverage it for our benefit,” she remarked.

Khare pointed out that India is at a ”transformative moment” in its economic journey, emphasizing that quality is essential for realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

She also mentioned that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is transforming from a regulatory body to a facilitator, with the government advocating for private sector testing infrastructure to support industrial growth while preserving consumer confidence.

The secretary urged industry players to engage in standards development, noting that the government is working to replace outdated testing methods with faster and more precise processes.

”Quality is not merely a pathway to development; it is also a destination in itself,” she emphasized.
