Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal highlights a prime chance for collaboration between India and the US.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal set to travel to Canada in May for discussions on trade.
While the conflict in West Asia has dominated headlines, trade—particularly India’s trade agreement with the United States—continues to be a significant topic of discussion.

On February 2, 2026, India and the US unveiled the framework for an interim bilateral trade agreement. Since that announcement, the deal has been developing towards implementation.

At an event on Wednesday, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal described this as a “perfect opportunity” for enhanced economic partnership.
Goyal stated that India and the United States can collaborate to establish trustworthy and resilient global supply chains, merging American innovation and investment with India’s talent and scale.

Discussing the growing economic ties between the two nations, Goyal remarked that the current global landscape offers a significant chance for India and the US to fortify their cooperation across various sectors and create reliable supply chains for the future.

He also recognized the role of US companies and investments in generating job opportunities in India, noting the creation of nearly 10 million jobs through American enterprises operating in the country.

However, he suggested that the overall economic impact might be considerably larger than current estimates indicate.

Piyush Goyal On Rupee

Regarding the Indian Rupee’s fluctuating state, the Commerce Minister mentioned that India is closely observing the recent decline, with all government branches working together and considering several measures. Piyush Goyal addressed reporters on Wednesday.

He indicated that there are no current plans to restrict non-essential imports, but the government is urging citizens to limit expenditure on import-dependent products to alleviate pressure on the economy and external balances.

Key US Visits In India

The minister also noted that the chief negotiator from the United States, Jamieson Greer, is anticipated to visit India in June 2026, demonstrating ongoing engagement between New Delhi and Washington concerning trade and economic issues.

Additionally, Goyal pointed out Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent foreign visit as “highly successful,” mentioning that India received accolades from the Food and Agriculture Organisation for its agricultural initiatives. According to Goyal, this recognition reflects the dedication and effort of Indian farmers.

As for US Senator Marco Rubio’s forthcoming meetings with Indian officials, Goyal clarified that Rubio’s discussions would take place with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
