Giveaway Craze: Cash Handouts for Women Take Center Stage in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal Election Campaigns
Cash transfers for women have taken a prominent role in the election campaigns of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, with political parties enhancing their welfare pledges to attract a vital voting demographic.

Direct cash assistance programs, especially those targeting women, have become a focal point in party manifestos across both states, emphasizing the rising significance of focused welfare in electoral strategies.

In Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has prioritized support for women, pledging to increase monthly assistance from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000. Additionally, the ruling party plans to distribute ₹8,000 vouchers for homemakers to buy household items, alongside offering free laptops for students pursuing higher education and expanded scholarships for underprivileged groups.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the main opposition, has responded with a similar welfare initiative. Their promises include ₹2,000 in monthly support for women managing households, free refrigerators, and a ₹25,000 subsidy for working women to buy two-wheelers. Other proposals involve three free LPG cylinders per year and interest-free loans for women from minority communities.
Introducing a new angle to the competition, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has unveiled a higher monthly support of ₹2,500 for women. The party also suggests benefits like gold and silk sarees for brides, six free LPG cylinders annually, a complete waiver of farm loans, and monthly aid for unemployed youth.

In West Bengal, welfare initiatives directed at women form the foundation of campaign promises. The ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has vowed to enhance its Lakhibhandar scheme by increasing assistance by ₹500, raising monthly payments to ₹1,500 for women in the general category and ₹1,700 for those from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. The party has also promised financial aid for unemployed youth and initiatives to improve safety for women working late shifts.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has suggested a higher monthly allowance of ₹3,000 for women in the state, along with a 33% quota for women in government and police positions. They have also outlined plans to generate one crore jobs and implement legislation for a Uniform Civil Code within six months of taking office.

Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front is focusing on household relief by offering free electricity for up to 100 units and a 50% subsidy on consumption up to 200 units. The Indian National Congress has concentrated its pitch on providing annual financial assistance of ₹15,000 to farmers.

As both states approach polling day, the scale and extent of welfare pledges signify an escalating competition among parties, with women voters and direct benefit schemes playing a crucial role in influencing electoral results.
