As reported by Bloomberg, five LNG tankers that had loaded up in Qatar and found themselves stuck in the Persian Gulf for over a month have stopped heading toward the strait’s western entrance.
Data indicates that some vessels have slowed significantly, while others have redirected back toward Qatari waters.
This latest move by Iran follows a period of uncertainty and increased activity in the strait. Vessel owners in the vicinity, who wish to remain anonymous for security reasons, stated that the Islamic Republic communicated to maritime crews that the channel was closed, with one vessel even reporting gunfire.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, claimed on Friday that Hormuz was “completely open” to commercial shipping.
