Google launches Gemini for Mac with a dedicated desktop application and keyboard shortcut integration.

Google's Gemini rivals ChatGPT as Alphabet implements its AI expansion strategy.
Sundar Pichai announced on Wednesday, April 15, the launch of the Gemini app for macOS, making it the first time the AI assistant is available as a native desktop application.

In a post on X, Pichai mentioned that the initial release was developed in collaboration with Antigravity, transforming from concept to a native Swift prototype in just a few days, and noted that additional features are on the way.

The macOS app is designed to seamlessly integrate into users’ workflows, providing access through a global keyboard shortcut (Option + Space) without the need to switch applications.
Google aims to minimize friction for users seeking immediate assistance while working on documents, spreadsheets, or creative tools.

A standout feature of the desktop version is the capability to share content on-screen with Gemini for contextual support. Users can share specific windows, including local files, to request summaries, analyses, or suggestions. For example, the app can pull insights from charts or give quick answers while users review documents.

The company is also marketing the app as a productivity tool suitable for both enterprise and creative applications. Users can create images and videos directly within their workflow, alongside tasks like verifying information or retrieving formulas, all without interrupting their current activities.

The Gemini app for macOS is available starting today at no cost, in all supported regions and languages. It requires macOS Sequoia (version 15.0 or later) and is compatible exclusively with Apple Silicon-powered devices.

Google indicated that this release is an early step towards creating a more “personal, proactive, and powerful” desktop AI assistant, with more updates anticipated in the coming months.
