West Bengal Elections: Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of Congress Claims He Holds ₹48 Lakh, While His Wife Possesses ₹1.27 Crore.
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, running in the West Bengal elections from Berhampore, has reported total movable assets of ₹48.40 lakh, an increase of ₹9.05 lakh compared to 2024 when he contested the Lok Sabha elections.

As per his election affidavit, Chowdhury possesses ₹94,500 in cash, while his wife, Atasi, holds ₹7.25 lakh.

His movable assets consist of ₹6.42 lakh across four bank accounts, mutual fund investments amounting to ₹8.15 lakh, a life insurance policy valued at ₹3 lakh, a vehicle worth ₹22.27 lakh, and gold jewellery estimated at ₹27.60 lakh.
The total for his movable assets is ₹48.40 lakh.

In contrast, the movable assets of the senior Congress leader’s wife total ₹1.27 crore, which includes bank deposits, mutual funds, insurance, a car appraised at ₹2.79 lakh, and jewellery exceeding ₹1 crore.

In his 2024 Lok Sabha election affidavit, the former West Bengal Congress chief declared having ₹2.11 lakh in cash, while his wife had ₹5.49 lakh.

At that time, his total movable assets were valued at ₹39.35 lakh, while his wife’s stood at ₹64.41 lakh. He also reported immovable assets of ₹2.78 crore, whereas his wife owned properties worth ₹49 lakh.

The affidavit submitted on April 1 further indicates that a dependent of the Congress leader possesses movable assets totaling ₹27.92 lakh.

Chowdhury does not own any immovable property.

His wife has liabilities amounting to ₹24.62 lakh, which includes a bank loan of ₹7.91 lakh.

In the affidavit for the West Bengal Assembly elections, filed on April 1, Chowdhury has noted three pending criminal cases against him—two in Murshidabad and one in Malda district—though no charges have been framed in any of these cases yet.

The affidavit states that his formal education extends to Class 9, although the senior Congress leader has demonstrated strong communication skills in Hindi and English throughout his extensive parliamentary and political career.

Chowdhury first contested an Assembly election in 1991 from Nabagram in Murshidabad but lost. He successfully won the seat in 1996, marking his entry as an MLA.

Over the past three decades, he has become a significant figure in Congress, winning the Berhampore Lok Sabha seat five times in a row and serving in important roles, including Union Minister of State for Railways and Leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha.

He lost the 2024 Lok Sabha election to Trinamool Congress candidate Yusuf Pathan.
