Netaji’s relative Chandra Bose joins TMC before Bengal elections

Mamata Banerjee submits nomination for Bhabanipur constituency, declares, "This is where it all started for me."
Chandra Bose, the grandnephew of Subhas Chandra Bose and a former member of the BJP, joined the Trinamool Congress on Sunday, just days before the West Bengal assembly elections.

Bose made the switch in the presence of state minister Bratya Basu and TMC MP Kirti Azad, accusing the BJP of engaging in “divisive politics” and straying from the values of the esteemed freedom fighter.

“It is impossible to uphold Netaji’s ideals while remaining in the BJP,” declared Chandra Bose.
“Currently, we observe that the BJP promotes divisive politics and fosters communal animosity. We must now unite to protect India and combat such divisive politics,” he stated shortly after joining the TMC.

Chandra Bose entered the BJP in 2016 and ran for the assembly elections from Bhabanipur that year, challenging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee without success.

He subsequently competed in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Kolkata Dakshin but again faced defeat.

Over time, his disagreements with BJP leadership grew, culminating in his resignation from the party in September 2023.

Following his departure from the saffron party, Chandra Bose frequently commended Banerjee for her positions on various issues.

On March 27, he referred to his choice to join the BJP as a “historic blunder” in a social media post.

“If a party’s aim is to create divisions among voters to secure victories in elections, I cannot support that,” he wrote.

The elections for the 294-member West Bengal assembly are scheduled to take place in two phases – on April 23 and April 29, with votes being counted on May 4.
