Kolkata Knight Riders bowler Harshit Rana sidelined for IPL 2026.
Kolkata Knight Riders have faced a significant challenge as they head into IPL 2026, with pacer Harshit Rana out for the season due to a ligament injury sustained during a T20 World Cup warm-up match.

The fast bowler suffered a ligament strain in his right knee during India’s warm-up against South Africa. After undergoing surgery, he now faces a lengthy rehabilitation process.

“This is a major setback, as Harshit Rana has been a crucial part of this team over the past seasons, including the championship season. He has truly evolved as a cricketer in the last year,” said KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar, who did not specify a timeline for Rana’s return.
“We will certainly miss Harshit Rana; replacing him is no simple task.” The KKR management is now evaluating options to replace Rana, with Navdeep Saini, Akash Madhwal, Simarjeet Singh, Sandeep Warrier, and KM Asif having participated in trials and practice matches.

Kolkata has begun exploring potential replacements. Asif and Warrier attended trials during the franchise’s first training session at Eden Gardens on Wednesday, while Simarjeet had impressed earlier in Mumbai during initial trials supervised by scouting head Biju George and deputy Manvinder Bisla.

On Thursday, Madhwal from Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals, along with former Royal Challengers Bengaluru bowler Saini, joined the trials alongside Simarjeet.

Team mentor Abhishek Nayar mentioned that the franchise plans to finalize and announce a replacement before heading to Mumbai for their IPL 2026 opener against the Mumbai Indians on March 29.

“In recent days, we have assessed a number of bowlers, working with our leadership group to determine who is the best fit for this role.” “We are still in the evaluation process, but we hope to identify someone who can contribute positively soon.” He added that they are waiting for a medical update from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where Rana is currently rehabilitating.

“Harshit is with the BCCI CoE… Once the Medical Team shares updates, we will inform you.

“Today (Friday) marks our first practice game, with another set for March 23. We intend to evaluate any player we choose before making an announcement. It may take a few more days, but we hope to conclude matters before we leave for Mumbai.

Additionally, Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana’s injury has complicated KKR’s preparations for the new season.

“Matheesha Pathirana, who has requested a No Objection Certificate to participate in IPL 2026, still needs to undergo the Physical Performance Test, as he is in rehabilitation for an injury. He will complete these tests following his recovery and rehabilitation,” Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) stated in a release.

Regarding Varun Chakravarthy’s performance, KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane believes the break after the T20 World Cup will be beneficial for the spinner, who had a tough time during the mega event held at home in February-March.

This 10-day break will really help him, especially after transitioning from a high-intensity tournament to another,” Rahane remarked.

Chakravarthy was among the top wicket-takers in the mega event, alongside Jasprit Bumrah, with 14 wickets, but conceded 9.25 runs per over for his scalps.
