“Cricketers should engage in golf alongside cricket. I wish I had taken up golf earlier as it could have improved my game. Golf truly helps with relaxation and alleviating stress,” Yuvraj mentioned on the occasion of unveiling the 10 franchises of the IGPL, with the schedule still to be finalized.
“Take, for instance, cricketers from Australia, New Zealand, England, and South Africa; they’ve been playing golf since childhood.”
Yuvraj remarked that while golf is often viewed as an elite sport, it is widely accessible thanks to public courses.
“We perceive golf as a high-status sport, but we want every child in India to experience it. We are working to introduce golf in schools, as I believe every child should explore various sports.
“I understand that cricket is our premier sport, but golf is also an exhilarating game worth trying. As someone who has represented India, I aim to contribute to other sports as well,” he expressed.
“The league (IGPL) will revitalize interest in golf, generate buzz about the sport, and inspire more children to participate. It will create financial opportunities in the sport, securing a bright future for the kids, and it’s our duty to make this happen.” This year’s IGPL will feature 10 franchises and host 15 events throughout the year, including five international tournaments in Mauritius, Congo, South Africa, and two in Morocco.
The highlight of the initiative is the partnership with LIV Golf, which has become a strategic ally of IGPL. The IGPL is also linked to the professional tour.
Thursday’s event was graced by tennis legend Leander Paes, co-owner of the Kolkata franchise in the league, alongside IGPL CEO Uttam Singh Mundy.
